Wanneer heb je de woning gekocht en waarom heb je toen besloten deze woning te kopen?
Zodra ik het appartement binnenstapte, werd ik gelukkig van het binnenvallende licht. Het was 1994 en ik was al een tijdje op zoek naar een woning, maar bijna overal waar ik ging kijken vond ik het te donker en te klein. Dit huis was liefde op het eerste gezicht. Met de ruimte, het licht en de rust had het een goede sfeer, en ik voelde me er direct thuis. De verkoopmakelaar liep rond met een groepje potentiële kopers, en voordat ik het wist, stak ik mijn vinger omhoog: dit is mijn huis!
Wat maakt het zo prettig wonen in dit huis en in deze buurt?
Het is een echt Amsterdams huis, met veel karakter. Het is er opvallend rustig en licht, en het heeft een relaxte sfeer. Er is ook genoeg ruimte om vrienden over de vloer te hebben; ik heb er ontelbare etentjes georganiseerd. Ik vind de Indische Buurt de leukste buurt van Amsterdam. De Javastraat is gezellig, met een mix aan internationale groentezaken, barretjes en restaurants, een goede boekwinkel, een heerlijke Volendammer vishandel en de beste (en aardigste) schoenmaker van de stad. De buurt is open en vriendelijk. De bewoners komen uit alle windstreken en iedereen kent elkaar, heel gemoedelijk.
De Madurastraat is een perfecte plek, want deze ligt om de hoek van de Javastraat maar dan zonder de drukte. Het is een groene straat met veel bloemen en planten, en aan de gemeenschappelijke tafels en komen bewoners op zomeravonden bij elkaar.
De Indische Buurt en de Madurastraat hebben ook een ideale bereikbaarheid. Het Muiderpoortstation is op vijf minuten lopen, het Centraal Station is maar één halte verder. Op de fiets ben je binnen tien minuten in hartje centrum, en met de auto zit je zo op de snelweg.
Waarom vertrek je/ waarom staat de woning te koop?
Het liefst zou ik hier altijd blijven; ik blijf het een droomplek vinden. Maar ik woon en werk inmiddels in het buitenland, en kan het huis helaas niet meer aanhouden. Het is tijd voor nieuwe bewoners om er met net zoveel plezier te wonen als ik dat al die jaren heb gedaan.

When did you buy the property, and why did you decide to buy it at the time?
As soon as I stepped into the flat, the light streaming in made me happy. It was 1994 and I’d been looking for a home for a while, but almost everywhere I went to view, I found it too dark and too small. This house was love at first sight. With its space, light and tranquillity, it had a lovely atmosphere, and I felt at home there straight away. The estate agent was showing a group of potential buyers round, and before I knew it, I’d put my hand up: ‘This is my home!’
What makes living in this house and in this neighbourhood so enjoyable?
It’s a real Amsterdam home, full of character. It’s remarkably peaceful and light, and it has a relaxed atmosphere. There’s also plenty of space to have friends round; I’ve organised countless dinner parties here. I think the Indische Buurt is the nicest neighbourhood in Amsterdam. Javastraat is a lovely place, with a mix of international greengrocers, bars and restaurants, a good bookshop, a wonderful Volendammer fishmonger and the best (and friendliest) cobbler in town. The neighbourhood is open and friendly. The residents come from all corners of the globe and everyone knows each other – it’s all very cosy.
Madurastraat is the perfect spot, as it’s just round the corner from Javastraat but without the hustle and bustle. It’s a leafy street with plenty of flowers and plants, and residents gather at the communal tables on summer evenings. The Indische Buurt and Madurastraat also offer excellent transport links. Muiderpoort station is a five-minute walk away, and Central Station is just one stop further on. By bike, you can reach the city centre in under ten minutes, and by car you’re on the motorway in no time.
Why are you moving away/why is the property for sale?
I’d love to stay here forever; I still think it’s a dream place. But I now live and work abroad, and unfortunately can no longer keep the house. It’s time for new residents to enjoy living here just as much as I have over all these years.
